Hang onto your helmets... I can't hardly believe this! I'm staying in a REAL CASTLE!
Amberley Castle was owned by the Bishop of Chichester with various buildings evolving from 1103 -1200. The crenellations and dungeon was added in the 1300's to ward off pirates. By 1382 the castle was a fortified manor house for residing bishops and owned by the Church.
In 1526 our Dear Henry visited Bishop Sherborne to seek advice about his divorce from Catherine of Aragon. Elizabeth I stayed here between 1588 and 1603.
Oliver Cromwell destroyed it in 1643. Stone from the ruins was pilfered to use around the village.
Charles II visited in 1660.
The castle went into private hands and was renovated, the interior manor house added, and used as a hunting lodge.
In 1945 Princess Elizabeth visited with friends.
The 19 rooms are named after castles, I'm in Pevensey.
And I have access to the gatehouse tower. via a not-so- secret door. Up the stairs are a couple unused rooms, then the battlements. Its dirty with a dead dove. All very creepy.

The Norman church is believed to have been built around 1100. The nave still has two painted consecration crosses and there's a surviving mural depicting some sort of battle with angels looking on.
The tall chancel arch with its triple zigzag decoration is magnificent. The church is dedicated to St Richard.
